When you get to the step to inject spores into the grain jars (this is called inoculation), you need to do this in a room that is small, and that can be deep cleaned. This room I'm going to call a clean room.
You don't want carpet in that room if you can help it. Carpet notoriously will hold all sorts of germs and spores in it. A small closet or a small bathroom will work really well.
What you will need for Cleaning and Set Up
🟧 Flat mop for cleaning your walls in clean room
🟧 Cleaning supplies to disinfect your clean area
🟧 Hair net
🟧 1 box of disposable gloves. Believe me, you will need a whole box of these!
🟧 Folding table to help in your clean room with inoculation
🟧 2 bottles of 70% isopropyl alcohol
🟧 1 box of alcohol prep pads (you will use only 20 or so)
🟧 Roll of paper towels: open right before inoculation
🟧 2 spray bottles and heads These two will be used for the 2 bottles of isopropyl alcohol. If you want one for bleach, then get more.
🟧 Mushroom spore syringes and needles,
4 syringes that are 10 cc each. This is where I got mine. He includes
with the spore syringe a sterile needle for each syringe. That is good.
That is what you will want to use. One needle for each spore syringe.
Cleaning The Clean Room
For me, I used a small bathroom in my home. I took out EVERYTHING from the bathroom.
The picture above is not my bathroom... but oh how I wish it
was! 😂 I took out the towels, the garbage, the toilet cleaner, the rug, the shower curtain,
all the stuff on the counter and on the floor. I did leave everything that was inside a cabinet.
Scrub
everything down with bleach. You don't need to use straight bleach.
Read the directions on the bleach bottle about how to dilute it for cleaning.
Bleach
down the toilet, the tub, the counter, the sink, the facets, the
cupboards, the blinds, the window seal, the baseboards, the light, the
ceiling, the floor - the WHOLE bathroom!
For the walls, get
a flat mop, like the one I've listed above. I personally don't own this particular mop,
but I do have one that is very similar and love it! It washes walls
and floors beautifully!
Close the door slowly when you are done. Your goal is to not get extra air into the area. Don't let anyone use the room or bathroom after you have cleaned it. I put a sign on the door so it was clear to the whole family that they would have to deal with a mamma bear if they opened that door!
This will let the air settle, and the spores of molds and
fungi and dust will be easier to eliminate.
Don't open the window for the same reasons. There are all sorts of spores in the air!!
You can clean the room anytime, but you really want it super clean 12 hours or less before you are doing the inoculation.
Set-Up Your Clean Room
- Get your 2 bottles of 70% isopropyl alcohol, and open the lids.
- Get your spray bottles, and take off the sprayers.
- Put the sprayer on each of the bottles of the isopropyl alcohol bottles. If the sprayer doesn't fit on the bottle (most typical spray bottle sprayers will!), then pour the isopropyl alcohol into the spray bottle and use that.
- Your alcohol sprayer should look like the picture above.
- Gather
all the supplies and items you are going to bring into your clean room:
folding table, 70% isopropyl alcohol sprayer (just one, the other one
will stay outside your clean room), paper towels (open them either in the clean room, or just before going in), gloves (4 pairs just
in case), spore syringes, needles, and alcohol wipes.
- Put on your mask, gloves, and hair net before entering your clean room.
- Either get naked, or put on clean clothes before entering your clean room. Clothing will hold spores on them. We want to minimize that as much as possible from here on out.
- Open the door slowly, enter the clean room with all of your things. Close the door slowly.
- Set up your folding table in your clean room.
- Spray
down a paper towel generously with alcohol. The paper towel should be
very wet. Rub down the isopropyl alcohol container and the sprayer head
with the paper towel.
- Spray down your gloves with the 70% isopropyl alcohol, and rub the gloves together to make sure they are thoroughly disinfected.
- Spray
down the table with a generous amount of 70% isopropyl alcohol, using a
paper towel to clean the top of the table, and spread the alcohol
around.
- Place on the table: spore syringes, 20 alcohol pads, 3 pairs of gloves, paper towels, and needles.
- Spray all of the items down with the alcohol to disinfect them.
- Grab all the used paper towels, and take them out with you.
- Exit the clean room carefully and slowly, trying not to disturb the air.
- Close the door.
